The last 12 months have been another eventful period for global sustainability. Approaches to sustainability and ESG have continued to evolve across different markets, reflecting varying regulatory priorities, political environments and economic pressures. Against this backdrop, momentum behind the energy transition and biodiversity protection has continued to build, while climate adaptation and resilience have become more prominent in international climate policy discussions.

For actuaries, sustainability continues to present both challenges and opportunities. Across insurance, pensions and investment, actuaries are helping organisations understand the financial implications of climate change, nature-related risks, evolving regulation and changing societal expectations. Whether through risk management, investment advice, capital modelling or long-term scenario analysis, actuarial skills are being applied to some of the most complex sustainability issues facing organisations today.

Planetary Solvency: Tipping into the wild unknown, published by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and Anglia Ruskin University, provided a notable example of actuarial thinking being applied to sustainability challenges. The report warned that biodiversity loss, climate shocks and geopolitical conflict are disrupting the food system, risking catastrophic impacts for the financial system and for society as a whole, and highlighted actions for policymakers, regulators and those working in the financial sector to integrate nature into decision making.
