Ruth Nelmes

AON

Hi, I’m Ruth. I am honoured to have been nominated for this award.

I lead EY’s Non-Life Actuarial team and also serve as the Chief Operating Officer for EY’s UK Financial Services business.

I joined EY back in 2001 and 25 years later, I still love being an actuary and a consultant, working with some of the largest (re) insurance companies across the globe.

I have built my career on forming long-lasting client relationships through strong delivery,  whether this is reserving engagements, capital model validation and IMAP, Part VIIs or assisting companies set up new offices and teams.  Helping insurance companies grow and transform is something I am passionate about – having real meaningful conversations about performance, market trends and innovation is a huge part of what makes my job fun.

I am also passionate about ensuring the next generation of actuaries are supported through their careers. I worked on the GIRO committee, and I am currently working with the IFoA on potential exam format changes. I also support the EY student population through coaching and personal development.  This is important to me, as I remember support and encouragement I received from my family, teachers and mentors throughout my career.

Outside of work, I have a 12-year-old son who is very sporty and so you will often find me at tennis courts, cricket pitches or in swimming pools. When I have free time, I am also sporty and adventurous – having taken on both the Lloyd’s building abseil challenge and London Marathon in 2024 raising money for the British Red Cross, a charity close to my heart.
