Mirjam Spies
I’m delighted to be nominated and would like to thank you for the nomination.
I started in actuarial at a consultancy having studied Maths in Germany (and English which has come in handy) many years ago. I became a capital actuary as I loved how all bits of the business flow together into capital and you need to understand lots of different areas to run a capital model. I joined Lloyd’s in 2019 in capital oversight- and have since worked in risk, in reserving oversight and most recently in exposure management. I have just started my second stint as Chief Actuary of Lloyd’s.
I am truly passionate about doing the right thing and ultimately keeping policyholders safe by managing the risk around reserves and capital- and I have worked hard to drive the market forward on big issues like geopolitical risks, inflation and now the softening market conditions. My latest project is to transform how we set capital for Lloyd’s syndicates as I’d really like to make it easier for all of us and enable us to focus on the main risks.
Having had so many different roles my key learning has been that the line “that is not my job” is not really an answer and that taking responsibility and pushing issues forward will benefit you in the end- even if it’s hard work sometimes. I have met so many amazing people on the way and they have supported me to have a fantastic career while bringing up my 3 girls and I love supporting other people around me to achieve their potential.
